SMART Recovery

Great News for Recovery Homes and Other Recovery Organizations

The Elevance Health Foundation is working with the Fletcher Group Rural Center Of Excellence to make SMART Recovery mutual support programs more widely available through recovery housing organizations and recovery support programs.

  • SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. SMART Recovery is an evidence-based approach emphasizing self-directed action with tools grounded in cognitive science.
  • Now in its 29th year,  SMART’s nonprofit programs and tools can be used as a stand-alone curriculum or in combination with other curricula and recovery pathways.
  • SMART meetings are facilitated by trained volunteers and provided to participants free of charge.
  • SMART tools can be used in on-going support groups and in a structured 12-session course. All tools and curriculum are based on the same science-based principles.
  • SMART’s Successful Life Skills Curriculum does not replace other mutual aid groups such as AA/NA and 12-Step Groups. It is a adjunct to those mutual aid groups.

What is the Grant Opportunity and Who Qualifies?

  • The Elevance Health Foundation is limiting this grant opportunity to recovery support service organizations in California, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Virginia.
  • Participating organizations also receive a $1,200 stipend for implementing and evaluating the 12-session program if participants evaluate their experience through brief surveys during the course.
  • Access to SMART Recovery’s 12-session Successful Life Skills Program including all course materials, equipment, and facilitation training, is provided at no cost. This program focuses on skill building in four areas:
    • Building and maintaining motivation
    • Coping with urges
    • Managing thoughts and feelings
    • Leading a balanced life
  • SMART training certification is awarded to newly trained facilitators upon course completion.
