SMART Recovery

Great News for Recovery Homes and Other Recovery Organizations!

The Elevance Health Foundation has partnered with the Fletcher Group Rural Center Of Excellence to make SMART Recovery mutual support programs more widely available to recovery housing and support services organizations.

  • SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. SMART Recovery is an evidence-based approach emphasizing self-directed action with tools grounded in cognitive science.
  • Now in its 29th year,  SMART’s nonprofit programs and tools can be used as a stand-alone curriculum or in combination with other curricula and recovery pathways.
  • SMART meetings are facilitated by trained volunteers and provided to participants free of charge.
  • SMART tools can be used in on-going support groups and in a structured 12-session course. All tools and curriculum are based on the same science-based principles.
  • SMART’s Successful Life Skills Curriculum does not replace other mutual aid groups such as AA/NA and 12-Step Groups. It’s the perfect complement to any mutual aid group.

Who Qualifies?

  • The Elevance Health Foundation is limiting this grant opportunity to recovery housing and support service organizations in Florida, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Participating organizations receive training, materials, and equipment at no cost plus a $1,200 stipend for implementing the 12-session Successful Life Skills Program and evaluating the results.
  • The program has proven to be an effective recovery aid around the world by helping those in recovery:
    • Build motivation
    • Manage thoughts and feelings
    • Cope with urges, and
    • Lead a balanced life
  • SMART training certification is also awarded to newly trained facilitators upon course completion so they can extend SMART’s benefits to countless others.

Who’s Using It?

Numerous recovery houses and other recovery organizations have implemented SMART Recovery with assistance from the Fletcher Group. For example, the Seattle Recovery Café began offering weekly SMART meetings in January of 2022. Facilitated by a trained volunteer, Seattle Recovery Café now offers SMART meetings twice each week using SMART’s Successful Life Skills Curriculum.

What Do They Say About It?

“The self-confidence of our residents has skyrocketed. For the first time, they feel like they can get to the root of things and take control of their own recovery. SMART has had a massive impact.”–Traci Hooper, Beneath the Shade Recovery Home in Dover, Ohio

“SMART Recovery isn’t a test balloon. Its success has been documented for decades. We know the difference it can make because we’ve seen the lives it’s changed and saved.”–SMART Recovery Project Coordinator Brad Glaser
